Se introduce con un cap\u00edtulo dedicado al an\u00e1lisis de su fortuna cr\u00edtica donde se revisan los juicios de valor m\u00e1s significativos vertidos sobre el hombre y la obra desde su \u00e9poca a nuestros d\u00edas.  el estudio de la producci\u00f3n pict\u00f3rica, titulado manuel g\u00f3mez-moreno gonz\u00e1lez pintor, se fragmenta en cinco secuencias cronol\u00f3gicas seg\u00fan las divisiones que parece reclamar la evoluci\u00f3n del estilo.  en primer lugar, se aborda el decisivo periodo de formaci\u00f3n del artista, desarrollado entre granada y Madrid siguiendo patrones del academicismo ecl\u00e9ctico propio del romanticismo tard\u00edo. Este periodo se prolonga hasta 1862. La segunda secuencia discurre entre esta etapa de aprendizaje y la que hubiera sido su l\u00f3gica continuaci\u00f3n, es decir, la prosecuci\u00f3n de estudios en roma, a donde g\u00f3mez-moreno s\u00f3lo puede viajar quince a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde, en 1878. Entre tanto, la carrera del pintor transcurre \u00edntegramente en su ciudad natal, reducida al espacio que le dejan la ocupaci\u00f3n docente y las crecientes aficiones arqueol\u00f3gica e historiogr\u00e1fica, siguiendo un proceso que incorpora a los originarios presupuestos estil\u00edsticos un progresivo naturalismo.  en roma el avance en direcci\u00f3n de cierto realismo decidir\u00e1n definitivamente su orientaci\u00f3n estil\u00edstica. Desde 1881 su actividad se ci\u00f1e de nuevo al \u00e1mbito granadino, donde hasta el final evoluciona s\u00f3lida pero sin novedades importantes, siempre compartiendo tiempo y esfuerzo con la docencia y la investigaci\u00f3n hist\u00f3rica. No obstante, se ha introducido un alto en torno a 1895 para estudiar por separado una \u00faltima etapa marcada por la agudizaci\u00f3n del antiguo conflicto del artista con la pintura.
