Por su funci\u00f3n demostrada y por su secuencia similar a prote\u00ednas de otras bacterias, el gen orf1 y su producto orf1 pasan a denominarse crte y crte, respectivamente, y el gen orf3 y su producto crtb y crtb, respectivamente. Por otro lado, datos previos hab\u00edan demostrado que, en m.Xanthus, la deshidrogeneraci\u00f3n del fitoeno hasta licopeno, v\u00eda fitoflueno, dseta-caroteno y neurosporeno, era llevada a cabo conjuntamente por dos deshidrogenasas que est\u00e1n determinadas por el gen orf2, del oper\u00f3n carb, y por el gen crti. En este trabajo se ha avanzado en el estudio de las acciones concretas de dichas enzimas en el proceso de deshidrogenaci\u00f3n, principalmente por expresi\u00f3n heter\u00f3loga de los genes orf2 y crti en estirpes de e.Coli productoras de carotenos parcialmente deshidrogenados. Se concluye, con dichos experimentos, que la prote\u00edna irf2 realiza la isomerizaci\u00f3n del cis-fitoeno a trans-fitoeno y las dos primeras deshidrogenaciones que transforman el trans-fitoeno en dseta-caroteno. La prote\u00edna crti es capaz de deshidrogenar el dseta-caroteno hata licopeno. Tambi\u00e9n se concluye que el reconocimiento de orf2 y crti por su sustrato depende m\u00e1s de la conformaci\u00f3n estereoespec\u00edfica del mismo que de su grado de deshidrogenaci\u00f3n. Se propone el nombre de crtia para la deshidrogenasa orf2 y crtib para la anterior deshidrogenasa \u00abcrti\u00bb. Por otro lado, datos previos indicaban que la enzima de m.Xanthus capaz de ciclar s\u00f3lo uno de los extremos del licopeno, produciendo gamma-caroteno, estaba formada por un heterod\u00edmero constituido por una mol\u00e9cula de orf7 y otra de orf8, productos de los genes orf7 y orf8, respectivamente, del oper\u00f3n cara.
