Se han aislado mutantes que demuestran que estos mecanismos son debidos a la accion de mecanismos celulares diferentes. Todas las mutaciones uvi encontradas son letales en homocariosis y dominantes en cuanto al tropismo en heterocariosis.  a los carotenos se les atribuyen funciones de proteccion de las celulas frente a las radiaciones y otras condiciones adversas. Se han expuesto a diferentes condiciones adversas estirpes de phycomcyces que difieren en su capacidad de sintetizar carotenos, se les ha dejado recuperarse juntas de los da\u00f1os, y se ha determinado su presencia en la poblacion resultante. La presencia de carotenos no ofrecio ninguna ventaja a la estirpe que lo contenia frente a las radiaciones gamma y ultravioleta c, la luz blanca en presencia de un fotosensibilizador (riboflavina) y el peroxido de hidrogeno. Tampoco presentan diferencias frente a estas acciones las estirpes de phycomyces que acumulan cantidades similares de diferentes carotenos (licopeno, fitoeno y
