Mediante clonacion y secuenciacion de las mutaciones, asi como analisis bioquimicos in vitro, se ha comprobado que las mutaciones se localizan en el gen pds que codifica la enzima carotenogenica fitoeno desaturasa. Las mutaciones son puntuales y consisten en todos los casos en la sustitucion de la arginina de la posicion 195 de la proteina. Se ha sobreexpresado el gen pds en synechocystis y se ha observado que un incremento en la expresion de dicho gen provoca un aumento en el contenido de carotenos. Se ha analizado la expresion del gen pds mediante fusion de la secuencia promotora de dicho gen con el gen cat, comprobandose que la actividad promotora es estimulada en condiciones de alta intensidad de luz.  esta estimulacion no depende de la fase de crecimiento, depende del flujo electronico fotosintetico y no requiere luz de longitud de onda menor de 600 nm. La activacion del promotor en condiciones de alta intensidad de luz no es una respuesta a la disminucion del contenido de carotenos que tiene lugar en dichas condiciones. Se ha clonado el gen pys que codifica la enzima fitoeno sintasa y se localiza a 77 pb del gen pds. El gen pys se ha expresado funcionalmente en e. Coli.
