Las kalikreinas son seroproteasas que liberan bradikinina a partir de los kininogenos plasmaticos. La bradikinina es el componente activo del sistema, siendo un potente vasodilatador. El skb ejerce acciones opuestas al sistema vasopresor renina-angiotensina-aldosterona, y actua aumentando el flujo sanguineo renal y de muchos tejidos, teniendo acciones diureticas y natriureticas y disminuye las resistencias vasculares perifericas sistemicas. En este estudio nos hemos propuesto determinar la participacion del skb en ancianos con insuficiencia cardiaca, asi como la influencia de la edad en la actividad de dicho sistema. Los resultados de este trabajo permiten concluir que la actividad del skb plasmatico disminuye con la edad, pudiendo ser un factor relacionado con la predisposicion a padecer enfermedades cardiovasculares, como la hipertension arterial. La actividad del skb en la insuficiencia cardiaca esta aumentada en los pacientes estudiados, hecho que posiblemente se trate de un mecanismo compensador destinado a restablecer el equilibrio hemodinamico. En este sentido el empleo terapeutico de los inhibidores de la enzima conversora de angiotensina, que potencian las acciones de dicho sistema deben ser considerados de eleccion en estos
