El aere constituye un importante organizador que controla el crecimiento de la extremidad y la especificaci\u00f3n de elementos a lo largo del eje proximodistal (pd). Durante las siguientes fases del desarrollo, el primordio de pata va creciendo y se empiezan a formar condensaciones cartilaginosas que luego dar\u00e1n lugar al esqueleto de la extremidad. Las primeras estructuras que se forman son las cercanas al tronco o proximales, de esta manera se produce una generaci\u00f3n de elementos cada vez m\u00e1s distales. El brazo, denomindado estilopodio, es la primera estructura que se diferencia; a este le sigue el antebrazo, o zeugopodio, y por \u00faltimo se forman los carpales y falanges de la mano, tambi\u00e9n llamado autopodio.  los genes meis codifican factores de transcripci\u00f3n homeobox tale. En drosophila, su hom\u00f3logo homothorax est\u00e1 implicado en la especificaci\u00f3n de las regiones proximales de la extremidad y su expresi\u00f3n es incompatibles con la formaci\u00f3n correcta de los segmentos distales.  hemos estudiado el patr\u00f3n de expresi\u00f3n de los genes meis durante el desarrollo de las extremidades en vertebrados. Meis1  y meis2 se expresan en la parte proximal del primordio de la extremidad que va a dar lugar al brazo\/pierna (estilopodio).  para estudiar el papel que meis desempe\u00f1a durante el desarrollo de la extremidad se llev\u00f3 a cabo un ensayo de sobreexpresi\u00f3n de meis, para ello utilizamos un retrovirus aviar e infectamos embriones de pollo en la regi\u00f3n presuntiva de ala y pata.
