Sin embargo, desde mediados del siglo xix la ocupaci\u00f3n completa de los dominios estuarinos (que redujo el estuario original a un simple canal mareal) y el incremento de los vertidos mineros, industriales y dom\u00e9sticos (directamente y sin tratamiento previo) han provocado un cambio dram\u00e1tico en las caracter\u00edsticas qu\u00edmicas de los sedimientos y la total eliminaci\u00f3n de su microfauna caracter\u00edstica. hoy en d\u00eda, la presencia en las muestras superficiales de la r\u00eda de bilbao de algunos foramin\u00edferos vivos transportados, cuyas especies han sido identificadas como dominantes en otros medios estuarios pr\u00f3ximos y en el propio estuario original de bilbao, sugiere la posibilidad de una recolonizaci\u00f3n satisfactoria de las zonas defaunadas una vez que las condiciones ambientales mejoren suficientemente. En consecuencia, la microfauna puede ser utilizada como una herramienta muy \u00fatil para determinar la efectividad del programa de regeneraci\u00f3n ambiental impulsado por las instituciones
