Dado que se distinguen dos tradiciones r\u00fanicas diferentes, este trabajo de investigaci\u00f3n ha tratado de encontrar el significado de estos nombres tanto en las fuentes anglosajonas como n\u00f3rdicas. Para llevar a cabo esta tarea ha sido necesario un exhaustivo an\u00e1lisis de la informaci\u00f3n contenida tanto en manuscritos como en inscripciones. Los datos disponibles comprenden per\u00edodos muy amplios, desde los primeros testimonios de los nombres de las runas en el siglo ix hasta las \u00faltimas fuentes del siglo xviii.  el primer cap\u00edtulo proporciona una visi\u00f3n general de los periodos de la escritura hasta llegar al alfabeto. Asimismo, se estudia el origen e historia de la denominaci\u00f3n de las letras. Seguidamente se hace una introducci\u00f3n a la runolog\u00eda, la evoluci\u00f3n de las runas en los diversos periodos y tradiciones, y se presenta la etimolog\u00eda de cada nombre.  en el cap\u00edtulo segundo, a lleva a cabo un an\u00e1lisis de aquellos manuscritos e inscripciones epigr\u00e1ficas en los que se recogen nombres de las runas, y se analizan todas las variantes ortogr\u00e1ficas y\/o ling\u00ed\u00bc\u00edsticas.  en el cap\u00edtulo tercero, se estudian los poemas r\u00fanicos en antiguo n\u00f3rdico, antiguo island\u00e9s, antiguo sueco y antiguo ingl\u00e9s, y adem\u00e1s se realiza una nueva edici\u00f3n del primero de ellos. Asimismo, se incluyen algunos aspectos novedosos relacionados con los nombres de las runas.  el cap\u00edtulo cuarto se centra en las fuentes m\u00e1s modernas. En primer lugar, se hace un an\u00e1lisis del uso de los nombres de las runas en al tradici\u00f3n islandesa de los r\u00edmur.
