Tras atravesar la barrera hematoencef\u00e1lica, alcanzan el cerebro, donde regulan la actividad neuroendocrina y otras funciones no reproductivas como la supervivencia neuronal, la neurog\u00e9nesis, o la plasticidad sin\u00e1ptica. sin embargo, el cerebro no es s\u00f3lo una diana de los esteroides, sino que tambi\u00e9n es un \u00f3rgano esteroidog\u00e9nico per se, ya que posee las enzimas y los precursores necesarios para la bios\u00edntesis de esteroides. Entre \u00e9stos, uno de los m\u00e1s importantes y m\u00e1s estudiados es el estradiol. Dado que el estradiol tiene particular elevancia como factor tr\u00f3fico en el cerebro, nuestros estudios se encaminan a estudiar su efecto en la neuroprotecci\u00f3n as\u00ed como la implicaci\u00f3n de los dos principales puntos de control de su s\u00edntesis: star (steroidogenic acute regulatory protein) y aromatasa. La aromatasa se encarga directamente de la bios\u00edntesis de estradiol, y es la \u00faltima etapa de control.  star, por su parte, se encuentra al principio de la ruta y es el paso limitante para la s\u00edntesis de todos los esteroides.  esta tesis doctoral se centra en los aspectos que relacionan la supervivencia de las neuronas en condiciones de da\u00f1o cerebral con la s\u00edntesis de esteroides in situ. En primer lugar, se estudi\u00f3 el efecto neuroprotector del estradiol en el hipocampo tras la administraci\u00f3n de \u00e1cido ka\u00ednico, y en la oliva inferior tras la administraci\u00f3n de 3-acetilpiridina, y se demostr\u00f3 que este efecto depende de la actividad de los receptores de estr\u00f3geno y de su interacci\u00f3n con igf-1 (insulin-like growth factor). Posteriormente, se caracteriz\u00f3 el efecto de las hormonas de origen gonadal en la supervivencia de las neuronas, y que depende de la conversi\u00f3n a estradiol mediante la enzima
