La presencia de una maquinaria sint\u00e9tica propia, surgiere que la funci\u00f3n de los esteroides en el sn va m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la regulaci\u00f3n de procesos reproductivos y sexuales.  dos de los aspectos de los esteroides que m\u00e1s inter\u00e9s cl\u00ednico suscitan en la actualidad, son la neuroprotecci\u00f3n en el sistema central (snc) y la mielinizaci\u00f3n en el sistema nervioso perif\u00e9rico (snp). Varios estudios cient\u00edficos y cl\u00ednicos se\u00f1alan la utilidad del tratamiento con esteroides en  dichos fen\u00f3menos. Nosotros hemos probado dichas caracter\u00edsticas en situaciones de lesi\u00f3n del tejido nervioso. En el snc, hemos probado el esfecto de esteroides gonadales -testosterona, dihidrotestosterona (dht), estradiol- y de esteroides adrenales -pregnenolona y dehidroepiandrosterona (dhea)- en la supervivencia neuronal frente a la muerte inducida por an\u00e1logos del glutamato en el hilus del hipocampo. En el snp, hemos analizado el efecto de los progest\u00e1genos en los cambios que ocurren en la mielina de las fibras nerviosas del nervio ci\u00e1tico, en dos situaciones de da\u00f1o de las mismas, la neuropat\u00eda diab\u00e9tica y el envejecimiento.  nuestros resultados indican que el estradiol protege a las neuronas hilares de la acci\u00f3n citot\u00f3xica de los an\u00e1logos del glutamato. Los esteroides precursores del estradiol, pregnenolona, dhea, y testosterona, son tambi\u00e9n neuroprotectores en los mismos modelos experimentales, mientras que dht, que no puede ser transformado en estradiol, no lo es. La deficiencia gen\u00e9tica o la inhibici\u00f3n de la aromatasa, la enzima responsable de la transformaci\u00f3n de la pregnenolona, la dhea y la testosterona en estradiol, revierte la neuroprotecci\u00f3n ejercida por estos.
