En el presente trabajo se ha demostrado que el biotipo 2, ha sido el agente causal de brotes infecciosos ocurridos en anguila cultivada en la comunidad Valenciana.  esta especie presenta lps con estructura \u00aben escalera\u00bb tipico de bacterias gram negativas de morfolog\u00eda colonial lisa, asi como una alta homogeneidad fenotipica, siendo la produccion de indol la unica prueba que discrimina biotipos. El biotipo 2 constituye un serogrupo homogeneo dentro de la especie, siendo el lps el componente de superficie responsable de la especificidad serologica.  los ensayos de virulencia in vivo han revelado que el biotipo 2 es capaz de infectar tanto animales homeotermos como poiquilotermos, por lo que puede ser considerado como un patogeno potencial del hombre. La infeccion producida por este microorganismo es multifactorial y en ella probablemente se encuentran implicados: i)una capsula polisacaridica, ii) la capacidad de obtener hierro a partir del individuo infectado y iii) la produccion de diversos factores lesivos, entre ellos una potente toxina con actividad hemolitica y citotoxica (\u00abvulnificolisina\u00bb), responsable del grave da\u00f1o tisular producido en el hospedador. Desde un punto de vista epizootiologico, se ha demostrado que el biotipo 2 es capaz de sobrevivir en el ambiente acuatico y de infectar nuevos individuos a traves del agua (reservorio) utilizando la epidermis como ruta de entrada.
