El seston representa el medio de transferencia de energ\u00eda entre distintos eslabones de la cadena tr\u00f3fica por lo que su importancia en las relaciones tr\u00f3ficas es muy destacable. El an\u00e1lisis de la composici\u00f3n bioqu\u00edmica del seston permite identificar el origen de los materiales y su utilidad como alimento para los organismos filtradores. Se ha discutido la idoneidad los \u00edndices bioqu\u00edmicas como indicadores de la calidad nutricional del seston o c\u00f3mo indicadores de contaminaci\u00f3n.  por otra parte el an\u00e1lisis de la composici\u00f3n bioqu\u00edmica de distintos estratos del sedimento ha permitido comprobar si la distinta cantidad y origen de los materiales que llegan al estuario se refleja asimismo en los sedimentos y nos ha permitido comprobar si el proceso de saneamiento en el que se encuentra inmerso el estuario de bilbao se ha reflejado en un descenso de los material de origen org\u00e1nico que
