El gen ae2 (slc4a2) es el miembro de esta familia que presenta una expresi\u00f3n m\u00e1s generalizada habi\u00e9ndose descrito en la mayor\u00eda de los tejidos. Para estudiar el papel que la prote\u00edna ae2 desempe\u00f1a en los diferentes tejidos se ha generado un modelo de rat\u00f3n con el gen ae2 parcialmente delecionado (ratones ae2-\/-). estos ratones son viables aunque dependiendo la cepa utilizada, presentan una mortandad perinatal relativamente elevada. Se ha observado que los ratones machos ae2-\/- son inf\u00e9rtiles mientras que las hembras s\u00ed llegan a ser f\u00e9rtiles. El an\u00e1lisis histopatol\u00f3gico de los test\u00edculos de los ratones ae2-\/- muestra azoospermia debida a una interrupci\u00f3n de las espermiog\u00e9nesis en el estadio vii. Adem\u00e1s se observ\u00f3 un aumento del n\u00famero de cuerpos apopt\u00f3ticos en los t\u00fabulos sem\u00edniferos y en el epididimo. Por otra parte, el epitelio epididimal presenta alteraciones compatibles con una metaplasia escamosa. estudios en el est\u00f3mago demostraron que la funci\u00f3n y morfolog\u00eda g\u00e1stricas est\u00e1n severamente alteradas presentando hipoclorh\u00eddria, hiperplasia de c\u00e9lulas g e hipergastrinemia, incremento de la divisi\u00f3n celular de la mucosa y un aumento de la degeneraci\u00f3n de las c\u00e9lulas ox\u00ednticas.
