Las sustancias seleccionadas como alternativa a los fungicidas sint\u00e9ticos fueron sustancias reconocidas como gras (generally recognized as safe) por la fda (food and drug administration), entre las que se encontraban diversos componentes esenciales (timol, citral, eugenol, cineol), la vanilina, distintos \u00e1cidos org\u00e1nicos as\u00ed como el per\u00f3xido de hidr\u00f3geno, el hipoclorito s\u00f3dico, el sorbato pot\u00e1sico y el ozono.  Como alternativa conjunta a la difenilamina y al uso de atm\u00f3sfera ulo se seleccion\u00f3 una nueva sustancia, el 1-metilciclopropeno (1-mcp).  La utilizaci\u00f3n del 1-metilciclopropeno, una oleofina c\u00edclina gaseosa que se une a los receptores de etileno retrasando la maduraci\u00f3n del fruto, podr\u00eda sustituir las atm\u00f3sferas controladas de muy bajo ox\u00edgeno (ulo) y permitir la conservaci\u00f3n en fr\u00edo o en atm\u00f3sferas controladas convencionales consiguiendo una mejora en el desarrollo de las caracter\u00edsticas organol\u00e9pticas y abaratando el coste de la conservaci\u00f3n en c\u00e1mara.   Diversos estudios tambi\u00e9n avalan la eficacia de esta sustancia en la inhibici\u00f3n de la aparici\u00f3n de escaldado superficial durante la conservaci\u00f3n por lo que su uso sustituir\u00eda los tratamientos con difenilamina.  entre las sustancias utilizadas en este estudio, las que demostraron una mayor actividad antimocrobiana in vitro frente a penicillium expansun, botrytis cinerea y alternaria alternata, fueron el timol, el citral, el eugenol y el per\u00f3xido de hidr\u00f3geno, con unas concentraciones m\u00ednimas letales en ning\u00fan caso superiores a las 2500 ppm.
