Est\u00e1 compuesto por seis especies: brucella abortus, b. Melitensis, b. Suis, b. Ovis, b. canis y b. Neotomae, de acuerdo con diferencias en patogenicidad y la preferencia por el hu\u00e9sped. La distinci\u00f3n entre especies y biovares se lleva a cabo mediante pruebas diferenciales basadas en caracterizaci\u00f3n fenot\u00edpica. Los m\u00e9todos de tipificaci\u00f3n para la diferenciaci\u00f3n de cepas de brucella han mejorado en esta \u00faltima d\u00e9cada, debido fundamentalmente a la introducci\u00f3n de la tecnolog\u00eda molecular, aunque a\u00fan no se ha establecido un m\u00e9todo definitivo de tipado molecular, debido principalmente al bajo grando de variabilidad gen\u00e9tica de este g\u00e9nero. Entre las distintas t\u00e9cnicas de tipado molecular, el rflp utilizando como sonda la secuencia de inserci\u00f3n is711, constituye un m\u00e9todo f\u00e1cil y reproducible. En este trabajo se describe la caracterizaci\u00f3n de un amplio n\u00famero de aislamientos de brucella en cantabria, basado en este m\u00e9todo. Se determin\u00f3 especie y biovar de los diferentes aislamientos, presentando la mayor\u00eda un patr\u00f3n de hibridaci\u00f3n id\u00e9ntico al de las cepas de referencia de los biovares 5,6 y  9 de b. Abortus. Si embargo el tipado convencional de dichas cepas de campo se correspond\u00eda con el del biotipo 3 de b. Abortus. Hemos detectado una mutaci\u00f3n por p\u00e9rdida de 5,4 kb en el cromosoma de las cepas de campo tipificadas como b, abortus, que nos ha permitido el sistema de identificaci\u00f3n de cepas mediante pcr ya existente.  se describe por primera vez la transposici\u00f3n de is711 en una cepa de b, ovis y en la cepa b2\/94, aislada de pinn\u00edpedos, empleando el pl\u00e1smido pgbg1 que funciona como
