Esto ha permitido establecer los mecanismos fundamentales que determinan su respuesta \u00f3ptica no-lineal a efectos de su aplicaci\u00f3n en dispositivos de conmutaci\u00f3n totalmente \u00f3ptica.  se han estudiado muestras con una amplia gama de contenidos de metal y morfolog\u00edas que incluyen desde estructuras formadas por nanocristales de cu aislados hasta estructuras con contenido met\u00e1lico pr\u00f3ximo al umbral de percolaci\u00f3n. Con el fin de caracterizar su respuesta \u00f3ptica se han utilizado las t\u00e9cnicas de elipsometr\u00eda espectrosc\u00f3pica, \u00abz-scan\u00bb y de mezclado degenerado de cuatro ondas respectivamente para determinar sus constantes \u00f3pticas lineales y de su susceptibilidad no-lineal de tercer orden, incluyendo la dependencia espectral y temporal de esta \u00faltima.  se ha establecido que la presencia de interacciones electromagn\u00e9ticas m\u00faltiples entre nanopart\u00edculas induce un valor m\u00e1ximo de la susceptibilidad no-lineal de tercer orden a la longutiud de onda de la resonancia del plasm\u00f3n de superficie en muestras con estructuras pr\u00f3ximas al umbral de percolaci\u00f3n. las contribuciones a la susceptibilidad de tercer orden asociadas a transiciones electr\u00f3nicas son las de mayor entidad para pulsos con duraciones inferiores a 500 fs. Para pulsos en el r\u00e9gimen de psicosegundos, la susceptibilidad de tercer orden es dos ordenes de magnitud mayor y est\u00e1 dominada por la contribuci\u00f3n a la susceptibilidad asocidad a la dependencia de la constante diel\u00e9ctrica de las nanopart\u00edculas con la temperatura. La susceptibilidad no-lineal de tercer orden intr\u00ednseca de las part\u00edculas met\u00e1licas es esencialmente independiente de su morfolog\u00eda para nanopart\u00edculas con tama\u00f1os mayores que unos pocos nan\u00f3metros.
