Lejos de agotarse con el final de la edad media, continuara vigente a lo largo de toda la edad moderna, a pesar de la paralela recuperacion de otra linea arquitectonica: la de tradicion clasica. Investigar por que causas y en que circunstancias se desenvuelve esta persistencia moderna constituye el objetivo de este trabajo. Para ello, se analizan dos tipos de factores: unos intrinsecamente tecnologicos, relativos a la construccion de estas estructuras, incidiendo en sus ventajas respecto a otras modalidades de cerramiento; y otros de indole mas cultural o sociologica, especialmente aquellos que sirvieron para legitimar la demanda de bovedas de cruceria entre la comitencia hispana. Resulta, en definitiva que la existencia de bovedas de cruceria en la arquitectura espa\u00f1ola de la edad moderna, no es un hecho anacronico, sino plenamente justificado en el contexto historido
