Son sintetizados por la mayor\u00eda de organismos fotosint\u00e9ticos como cianobacterias, algas y plantas y por algunos no fotosint\u00e9ticos como ciertos hongos, levaduras y bacterias.  phycomyces blakesleeanus es un hongo filamentoso perteneciente a la clase de los zygomycetes que acumula b-caroteno. Son dos los genes estructurales implicados en la ruta de bios\u00edntesis de b-caroteno en este hongo filamentoso, el gen carra y el gen carb. El dominio cara del gen bifuncional carra codifica la enzima fitoeno sintasa que sintetiza fitoeno a partir de geranilgeranilpirofosfato. el gen carb codifica la enzima fitoeno deshidrogenasa, la cual act\u00faa sobre la mol\u00e9cula de fitoeno originando licopeno. El dominio carr del gen carra codifica la enzima licopeno ciclasa, que introduce dos ciclaciones en los extremos de la mol\u00e9cula de licopeno dando lugar a b-caroteno.  en p. Blakesleeanus los genes carra y carb se localizan pr\u00f3ximos entre s\u00ed, en orientaci\u00f3n opuesta y separados por una peque\u00f1a regi\u00f3n promotora com\u00fan a ambos de 1381 bp.  la expresi\u00f3n de los genes carra y carb est\u00e1 regulada por la luz azul. El primero de los dos m\u00e1ximos de acumulaci\u00f3n de los transcritos de los genes carra y carb se produce muy r\u00e1pidamente tanto a bajas como a altas intensidades de irradiaci\u00f3n, mientras que el segundo se produce solamente cuando los micelios son iluminados con altas intensidades de luz azul, sugiriendo la existencia de un segundo componente en la respuesta, como ocurre en la fotocarotenog\u00e9nesis.  en condiciones de oscuridad una\/s prote\u00edna\/s reguladora\/s se une\/n a un fragmento del promotor com\u00fan de los genes carra y carb de p. Blakesleeanus formando un complejo de retenci\u00f3n probablemente implicado en la represi\u00f3n de  la carotenog\u00e9nesis en oscuridad.
