Esta reductasa parece estar involucrada en la toma de hierro, pudiendo constituir el primer paso en el transporte de hierro a trav\u00e9s de la membrana plasm\u00e1tica del hongo. La reducci\u00f3n de ferricianuro extracelular est\u00e1 acoplada con la liberaci\u00f3n de protones al medio extracelular. Ambos procesos son activados por vitamina k3, pero en ning\u00fan caso son estequiom\u00e9tricos. El efecto diferencial del dietilestilbestrol y el dicumarol sobre la liberaci\u00f3n de protones descarta a la atpasa como responsable de la liberaci\u00f3n de los mismos. Los resultados nos llevan a la conclusi\u00f3n de que la reducci\u00f3n del ferricianuro por la ferrirreductasa de membrana plasm\u00e1tica y la liberaci\u00f3n de protones en p.Blakesleeanus son procesos diferentes, que aunque acoplados, est\u00e1n regulados de manera independiente. Adem\u00e1s, se ha detectado otra actividad redox de membrana plasm\u00e1tica en p. Blakesleeanus que se ha caracterizado como afr reductasa, probablemente implicada en la estabilizaci\u00f3n extracelular de reductantes tipo ascorbato. Actividades tanto afr como ferricianuro reduct\u00e1sicas se han detectado y caracterizado en la fracci\u00f3n soluble de este hongo, diferentes de las caracterizadas en membrana plasm\u00e1ticas.
