Coli o157:h7 aisladas en espa\u00f1a entre 1986 y 1995; 2) la deteccion directa de verotoxina en heces de pacientes por tecnicas de enzimoinmunoensayo (eia) y de los genes codificadores de las verotoxinas por la tecnica de la reaccion en cadena de la polimerasa (pcr); y 3) el estudio de los factores de patogenicidad de e. Coli o157:h7, ecep y c. Freundii. Se emplearon tecnicas convencionales para determinar el serotipo, las caracteristicas bioquimicas y la sensibilidad a los antimicrobianos de las cepas de e. Coli o157. La produccion de verotoxina se estudio por las tecnicas de cultivo celular (cc) y eia. La deteccion de los factores de patogenicidad (genes codificadores de las verotoxinas y gen eae) se efectuo mediante la tecnica de pcr y la deteccion de las lesiones attaching and effacing mediante la tecnica de la tincion de los microfilamentos de actina (fas). La incidencia de la infeccion por e. Coli enterohemorragica en nuestro pais es baja (aproximadamente del 0,3%). Sin embargo, la frecuencia de complicaciones como el sindrome hemolitico-uremico (shu), ha sido muy elevada, habiendose producido en 4\/14 pacientes. De los 15 casos de colitis hemorragica estudiados, 14 estaban causados por e. Coli verotoxigenica del serotipo o157:h7\/h- y 1 por e. Coli o128:h-. Las tecnicas de cc y eia detectaron la produccion de verotoxina en 19\/29 cepas de e. Coli o157, correspondientes a los serotipos o157:h7\/h-. Todas las cepas verotoxigenicas eran portadoras del gen codificador de la vt2 y cuatro de ellas, adicionalmente, del gen codificador de la vt1. Todas las cepas de e. Coli o157:h7\/h-verotoxigenicas fueron sorbitol y beta-glucoronidasa negativas. De acuerdo con la clonalidad de este enteropatogeno, el biotipado ha mostrado una notable homogeneidad entre las cepas de e.  coli o157:h7\/h- verotoxigenicas.
