En general, la adh clase iv aparece en cornea y en los tejidos del tracto gastrointestinal superior; mientras que los isoenzimas de la clase i se localizan en tejidos internos. La adh clase iv muestra una buena eficiencia catalitica hacia los aldeidos derivados de la peroxidacion lipidica que sugiere la implicacion de la enzima en la proteccion de los tejidos epiteliales. En cambio, la baja actividad global de la adh de estomago descarta la importancia de la adh clase iv gastrica en el primer paso metabolico del etanol.  se ha caracterizado el sistema alcohol deshidrogenasa de anfibio en la especie rana perezi, constituido por 3 enzimas: adh-a, adh-b y adh-c. Se han clasificado las enzimas de rana de acuerdo al sistema humano; asi, la adh-a corresponde a una adh clase iii y la adh-b a una clase i.
