Se han establecido las condiciones de sedimentacion en que se formaron los materiales considerados, diferenciandose 8 sistemas deposicionales correspondientes a: 1) rampa mixta, 2) rampa carbonatada, 3) plataforma-talud siliciclastico, 4) plataforma con resalte-cuenca carbonatada, 5) talud carbonatado, 6) talud y plataforma siliciclastica, 7) banco carbonatado residual-plataforma siliciclastica, y 8) plataforma siliciclastica. Los 7 primeros sistemas deposicionales representan una sucesion evolutiva, mientras que el ultimo de ellos (8) perduro durante todo el intervalo de tiempo abarcando exclusivamente el extremo se del area de estudio. La evolucion de estos sistemas deposicionales, desde el aptiense superior al albiense inferior, determino la evolucion paleogeografica de la zona, la cual estuvo en estrecha relacion con la evolucion geodinamica de la cuenca vasco-cantabrica. El marco geotectonico para el cretacico inferior fue en lineas generales el de un \u00abrift\u00bb pericratonico. Se produjo asi una gradual compartimentacion de la cuenca en altos y surcos, que en el area de estudio se refleja en la individualizacion de una zona de paleoalto, sobre la que se desarrollo una plataforma carbonatada somera (sector de gorbea, al se) y una zona de paleosurco, en la que se acumularon materiales relativamente profundos de talud y cuenca (sector de orozko-okendo, al
