Se ha utilizado como modelo de estudio la proteina quimiotactica de escherichia coli, chey. Los estudios experimentales combinan tecnicas de ingenieria de proteinas con diversas tecnicas biofisicas (espectroscopia de fluorescencia, dicroismo circular y flujo parado) para determinar la ruta de plegamiento de esta proteina.  se ha determinado, en primer lugar, el mecanismo de plegamiento de la proteina salvaje caracterizando las especies cineticas que aparecen en la ruta de plegamiento. En segundo lugar se ha caracterizado energeticamente el estado de transicion en la reaccion de desplegamiento, mediante el estudio cinetico de mutantes puntuales distribuidos a lo largo de la secuencia.
