El desarrollo de este trabajo ha permitido purificar la enzima nitrato reductasa y caracterizar sus propiedades.  la conclusion del mismo es que la nitrato reductasa de g.  metallireducens parece ser la unica actividad de este tipo presente en este microorganismo. Es una proteina ligada a membrana. Para su purificacion se ha dise\u00f1ado un metodo que ha probado ser eficaz tambien en la purificacion de proteinas similares de otras bacterias; en particular, proteinas fuertemente ligadas a membrana, de gran hidrofobicidad y tama\u00f1o. La nitrato reductasa de g. Metallireducens corresponde a un tipo novel de nitrato reductasa con caracteristicas distintas a las conocidas hasta el momento. Presenta actividad de nitrato reductasa y de nitrito reductasa, se han caracterizado sus constantes cineticas, los valores de ph y temperatura optimos, la especificidad por substrato y el efecto de inhibidores en ambas actividades. Es un complejo que consta de tres subunidades, cuyo estudio ha permitido generar datos de secuencia que han servido para demostrar su escasa relacion con otras proteinas y para dise\u00f1ar la estrategia de identificacion y clonacion de los genes responsables de su expresion.
