El objetivo de esta tesis ha sido la evaluacion de diferentes arquitecturas de encaminadores de mensajes de cara a proponer alternativas mas eficaces para llevar a cabo la gestion de la comunicacion. Primeramente, se ha propuesto y evaluado un gestor de software de mensajes para un sistema multicomputador basado en transputers t800. Los resultados muestran las deficiencias de la gestion software del paso de mensajes e indican la necesidad de desarrollar dispositivos especificos para la gestion de la comunicacion. Por ello, se ha evaluado un prototipo de encaminador hardware denominado mp1 que utiliza un control del flujo novedoso, el mad-postman, y que permite efectuar encaminamiento adaptativo mediante el uso de planos virtuales. Este estudio se ha efectuado simulando una red de 1.024 encaminadores mp1 a nivel de puertas logicas. Esto nos ha permitido proponer criterios eficientes de implementacion del encaminador de mensajes en lo que respecta a la utilizacion de canales virtuales, tomando en consideracion los costes derivados de los mismos, medidos en tiempo de paso de los mensajes a traves del encaminador.
