Durante tres ciclos de cultivo, y el aprovechamiento de su biomasa lignocelulosica para la obtencion de energia por via de pirolisis y gasificacion.  los ensayos de corte invernal evidencian la posibilidad del aprovechamiento del cardo como forraje verde en esa epoca. La productividad final anual de las 6 poblaciones de cardo utilizadas en los ensayos de campo, demuestran el buen potencial productivo de la especie, incluso en condiciones extremas de sequia.
