Los argumentos que contiene estan todos organizados como una critica a la tesis de la continuidad y equiValencia entre el pensamiento religioso tradicional y el pensamiento cientifico, propugnada por robin horton, segun la cual es posible establecer objetivamente la superioridad de las teorias cientificas sobre las creencias magico-religiosas africanas subsaharianas.  a traves de un preciso analisis filosofico, en el que se presta una atencion especial a los esquemas basicos sobre los que opera cada uno de esos modos de pensamiento y a los criterios logicos y empiricos que utilizan en la validacion de sus afirmaciones respectivas, el autor persigue demostrar que la tesis de robin horton encierra algunos problemas fundamentales. En consecuencia, reivindica la necesidad de seguir manteniendo los postulados basicos del relativismo cultural, aunque se resiste a ceder ante las implicaciones del relativismo del programa
