La primera parte -capitulos 1 y 2- determina la presencia de la cruz y conceptos afines en la vida y en los escritos del santo.  la segunda parte -capitulos 3 a 6- es un analisis sistematico que comprende desde el ministerio de la redencion, pasando por un estudio antropologico, hasta el itinerario espiritual del cristiano, teniendo siempre como punto de referencia la cruz. A modo de epilogo se presenta una valoracion de la aplicacion a la doctrina sanjuanista del concepto de \u00abtheolog\u00eda crucis\u00bb.  tratandose de un estudio de teolog\u00eda espiritual, el punto de mira de la investigacion no es principalmente el aspecto dogmatico, sino el espiritual -ascetica y mistica-: la doctrina hecha vida.
