La critica mas reciente ha subrayado mas bien la preocupacion humeana de fundamentacion de las cuestiones relacionadas con el estatuto de la moral y de la estetica, subrayando el caracter esencialmente social de sus planteamientos. Se ha considerado asi en esta tesis que el pensamiento humeano sobre las cuestiones esteticas adquiere su significado mas pleno cuando se considera a la luz del contexto socio-cultural britanico del setecientos. En esta linea se analizan, entre otros factores, la importancia del surgimiento de un publico consumidor de arte y las consecuencias que este fenomeno ha tenido en la sensibilidad y en la reflexion sobre la naturaleza de la contemplacion estetica y del estatuto de la critica; asimismo se aborda la relevancia otorgada en este periodo de la historia social britanica a la figura del \u00abgentleman\u00bb como prototipo del hombre ilustrado.
