En general, en las reacciones llevadas a cabo por esta tecnica se observa una disminucion considerable del tiempo de reaccion y una mejora en el rendimiento obtenido, pero ademas en algunos casos se ha conseguido una modificacion en la quimio, regio o estereoselectividad de la reaccion.  se han estudiado distintos tipos de reacciones con microondas, tanto en ausencia de disolvente: sintesis de quinonas heterociclicas, transposicion de beckman, condensacion de knoevenagel; como en disolucion :  cicloadiciones a c60. Para todas las reacciones estudiadas se ha podido describir un nuevo metodo sintetico que permita obtener los productos de reaccion correspondientes en condiciones de reaccion suaves con rendimientos mayores para tiempos de reaccion inferiores a los descritos por via clasica.
