El test desarrollado utiliza la bioluminiscencia como t\u00e9cnica para determinar la viabilidad bacteriana. Esta t\u00e9cnica, se ajusta a las condiciones del estudio y a la bacteria considerada (s.  aureus), en el cap\u00edtulo 1 de la tesis. La bioluminiscencia se utiliza en la cuantificaci\u00f3n bacteriana para discriminar aquellos biomateriales empleados en cirug\u00eda ortop\u00e9dica que favorecen la colonizaci\u00f3n bacteriana (aleaciones de acero y titanio, cap\u00edtulo 2). En este cap\u00edtulo se describe la evoluci\u00f3n de la adherencia a biomateriales en funci\u00f3n del tiempo y la cepa, y se demuestra una mayor adherencia cuando las bacterias son formadoras de exopolisac\u00e1ridos. En el cap\u00edtulo tercero se describe la metodolog\u00eda empleada para la obtenci\u00f3n de biofilms bacterianos comparando diversos soportes, (poliestireno, gelatina, poli-l-lisina y placas preparadas para cultivos celulares), se concluye qe el material m\u00e1s adecuado para el desarrollo de biofilms son las placas de poliestireno con un pretratamiento comercial para favorecer los cultivos celulares. Sobre estas placas, en el cap\u00edtulo cuarto se desarrolla el test de antibi\u00f3ticos, ensayando la efectividad de 15 antimicrobianos sobre biofilms de 6, 24 y 48 horas de edad, y observando que varios de los antibi\u00f3ticos que eran efectivos en antibiogramas convencionales (microdiluci\u00f3n en medio l\u00edquido), resultaban ineficaces para eliminar biofilms bacterianos, (amikacina, estreptomicina, gentamicina, tobramicina, eritromicina, clindamicina, ciprofloxacina, ofloxacina). El efecto de los antibi\u00f3ticos sobre el biofilm se visualiz\u00f3 por microscop\u00eda electr\u00f3nica.
