Este codifica una prote\u00edna modular de 48 kda, xysl, en la que se distinguen cuatro regiones: p\u00e9ptido se\u00f1al, dominio catal\u00edtico, regi\u00f3n bisagra y dominio de uni\u00f3n a celulosa.  la prote\u00edna xys1l se obtiene por p\u00e9rdida del p\u00e9ptido se\u00f1al. Posteriormente, la eliminaci\u00f3n del dominio de uni\u00f3n a celulosa en xys1l da lugar a xysls.  la superproducci\u00f3n de ambas formas se llev\u00f3 a cabo en diferentes especies de streptomyces, obteni\u00e9ndose los mejores resultados con s. Parvulus. Xys1l y xys1s se purificaron mediante cromatograf\u00eda de intercambio ani\u00f3nico, y se determinaron sus caracter\u00edsticas bioqu\u00edmicas. Sobre los sustratos ensayados, las dos enzimas presentan actividad \u00f3ptima a ph 6.3 y 60 grados c, y son muy estables en un amplio rango de ph (4 a 10) y de temperatura (4 a 50 grados c).  la expresi\u00f3n del gen xysa se ve afectada por la fuente de carbono presente en el medio de cultivo. El xilano es el mejor inductor, mientras que la glucosa posee un papel represor. La sensibilidad a la fuente de carbono probablemente est\u00e1 mediada por una serie de secuencias repetidas presentes en la zona promotora.  el promotor de xysa es capaz de dirigir la expresi\u00f3n de otros genes tanto de jm8 como de otros or\u00edgenes.  finalmente, se han detectado genes hom\u00f3logos a xysa y prote\u00ednas similares a xys1l y xys1s en varias cepas del g\u00e9nero streptomyces. Algunas de las prote\u00ednas identificadas (similares a xys1l) se unen a celulosa cristalina, lo que sugiere la posibilidad de una transferencia horizontal de este gen entre las distintas
