Aunque su etiolog\u00eda es desconocida, actualmente se admite su origen autoinmune.  se han descrito alteraciones en el patr\u00f3n de producci\u00f3n de citoquinas en pacientes con formas activas de em y por eso, la determinaci\u00f3n de estos mediadores se ha propuesto como par\u00e1metro para valorar la actividad de la enfermedad.  nosotros hemos estudiado la producci\u00f3n de citoquinas proinflamatorias (il-2 e ifn-gamma) e inmunoreguladoras (il-4 e il-10) en c\u00e9lulas individuales, identificando as\u00ed la c\u00e9lula productora de citoquinas. Hemos estudiado adem\u00e1s la expresi\u00f3n de una mol\u00e9cula funcionalmente implicada en la enfermedad, la mol\u00e9cula cd49d y hemos intentado correlacionar estos par\u00e1metros con la actividad de la enfermedad.  nuestros resultados muestran lo siguiente: 1. La il-2 es producida mayoritariamente por c\u00e9lulas cd4+ mientras que el ifn-gamma es producido por c\u00e9lulas cd4+ y cd8+ en proporciones similares. 2. Tras activaci\u00f3n con pma + i, en formas activas de esclerosis m\u00faltiple se detecta un porcentaje significativamente mayor de c\u00e9lulas que producen citoquinas proinflamatorias (il-2 e ifn-gamma) que en formas inactivas de la enfermedad y que en controles. 3. La producci\u00f3n de il-10 tanto de forma espont\u00e1nea como tras activaci\u00f3n inespec\u00edfica, es mayor en pacientes con formas activas de em que en formas inactivas.  4. La intensidad media de fluorescencia de la mol\u00e9cula cd49d es significativamente mayor en c\u00e9lulas productoras de citoquinas que en c\u00e9lulas no productoras.  5. No hemos detectado producci\u00f3n de citoquinas (ni th1 ni th2) en c\u00e9lulas cultivadas durante 72 horas con mbp.  6.
