En las condiciones del noroeste de la pen\u00ednsula ib\u00e9rica, el principal agente causante de la mencionada plaga es sesamia nonagrioides (orden lepidoptera, fam. Noctuidae). Debido a que la mejora convecnioanl es uno de los m\u00e9todos de lucha m\u00e1s prometedores, siempre que se lleve a cabo dentro de un sistema de control integrado de las plagas, en este trabajo se intentaron estudiar ciertos aspectos de la relaci\u00f3n planta-par\u00e1sito que son b\u00e1sicos a la hora de dise\u00f1ar un programa de mejora eficaz. Los objetivos planteados para conseguir tal fin fueron: la identificaci\u00f3n de los mecanismos de defensa que exhibe el ma\u00edz frente al ataque de sesamia nonagrioides, el estudio de la herencia de los mecanismos de resistencia y tolerancia y la identificaci\u00f3n de la respuesta de los distintos genotipos a ambientes con diferentes tasas de infestaci\u00f3n natural de la plaga. Las conclusiones que se derivaron de este trabajo fueron:  1. Los tres mecanismos de defensa (antixenosis, resistencia o antibiosis y tolerancia) estuvieron presentes entre el material evaluado y dichos mecanismos fueron independientes.  2. La herencia de la resistencia fue principalmente aditiva y la herencia de la tolerancia tuvo un componente aditivo y otro dominante.  3. El m\u00e9todo m\u00e1s eficaz para mejorar el comportamiento del ma\u00edz frente al ataque de sesamia nonagrioides ser\u00eda aquel que seleccionase conjuntamente por resistencia y rendimiento en condiciones de infestaci\u00f3n artificial.  4.
