La 6-hidroxidopamina (6-ohda) produce toxicidad sobre las celulas cromafines bovinas sin necesidad de ser captada, a traves de la formacion de radicales libres y por un mecanismo independiente del calcio. Este modelo de toxicidad por 6-ohda en celulas cromafines se utiliza para la busqueda de farmacos citoprotectores, observando que ciertas moleculas como bupropion, manitol, catalasa, desferrioxamina, glutation, n-acetilcisteina y los calcio-antagonistas r56865 y lidoflacina, poseen un importante efecto citoprotector y merecen una evaluacion mas profunda.  como los radicales libres estan implicados en la lesion isquemica cerebral y en algunas enfermedades neurodegenerativas como la enfermedad de parkinson, la toxicidad por 6-ohda en celulas cromafines puede servir como un modelo in vitro
