Mediante su expresi\u00f3n en sistemas virales heter\u00f3logos, como el virus de la vacuna (vaccinia) y baculovirus, se ha comprobado que a179l se comporta como un gen supresor de la muerte celular programada inducida por la sobreexpresi\u00f3n de la prote\u00edna quinasa r (inducida por interfer\u00f3n) as\u00ed como de la apoptosis inducida por la infecci\u00f3n de c\u00e9lulas sf9 con baculovirus a tiempos tard\u00edos. En las c\u00e9lulas sf9, la actividad funcional de a179l es dependiente del anclaje celular a un sustrato. Se sugiere que la funci\u00f3n del gen a179l es esencial dentro del ciclo replicativo del virus debido a la imposibilidad de generar mutantes de deleci\u00f3n para a179l en el virus de la peste
