La causa fundamental es la dosis de radiacion dispersa absorbida por el (los) testiculo (s).  en el presente estudio se pretende valorar la gonadotoxicidad de dos de los protocolos radioterapicos mas utilizados en los ultimos a\u00f1os:  la telecobaltoterapia aislada y la asociacion de telecobaltoterapia, roentgenterapia y proteccion testicular.  para ello se evaluo primeramente la dosis de radiacion dispersa en las gonadas con ambas tecnicas, utilizando los valores obtenidos en la clinica y con maniqui antropomorfico (dosimetria computarizada y fisica).  la dosis de radiacion dispersa a nivel testicular en la telecobaltoterapia aislada (tecnica ii) es de 516cgy y en la asociacion de telecobaltoterapia, roentgenterapia profunda y proteccion gonadal (tecnica i) es de 93cgy.  los valores de la radiacion dispersa inferidos en el estudio preliminar se han aplicado en un modelo animal de experimentacion constituido por 75 ratas adultas.  el da\u00f1o testicular se determino evaluando los pesos y volumenes testiculares, asi como la proliferacion de la linea germinal mediante la deteccion inmunocitoquimica de pcna en las espermatogonias.  los resultados obtenidos muestran que en los testiculos de las ratas tratadas con dosis altas (516cgy) se observa un menor peso y volumen testicular, asi como un descenso en la proliferacion espermatogonial respecto a los animales tratados con bajas dosis (93cgy).  con esto se pone de manifiesto que la telecobaltoterapia fraccionada a dosis altas es mas gonadotoxica que cuando se emplea a bajas dosis.
