Es un arbusto perenne y hemipar\u00e1sito di\u00f3dico, perteneciente a la familia santalaceae. Su fenolog\u00eda, comparada con la de otras especies de arbustos de la cuenca mediterr\u00e1nea o de otras \u00e1reas de clima mediterr\u00e1neo, es \u00fanica al tener extremadamente largos periodos de crecimiento, floraci\u00f3n y fructificaci\u00f3n, y un extenso solapamiento temporal de todas estas actividades. Este hecho peculiar nos llev\u00f3 a profundizar en el conocimiento de la especie, estudiando aspectos fitoqu\u00edmicos que pudiera contribuir a explicar su fenolog\u00eda at\u00edpica.  el material de estudio ha consistido en las sumidades femeninas (floridas y fructificadas) y masculinas (floridas, en reposo y en crecimiento), recolectadas en diferentes \u00e9pocas anuales en do\u00f1ana (huelva), el viso del alcor (sevilla) y bolonia (c\u00e1diz). A cada una de las muestras (un total de 18) se le realiz\u00f3 un \u00abscreening\u00bb fitoqu\u00edmico para poner de manifiesto la naturaleza de sus principales componentes. Habida cuenta que los resultados obtenidos nos revelaron a los flavonoides entre los compuestos mayoritarios, se procedi\u00f3 a su estudio cuali y cuantitativo en todas las muestras. Para ello, fueron sometidas a extracci\u00f3n sucesiva con disolventes de polaridad creciente (cloroformo y metanol) estudiando los correspondientes extractos metan\u00f3licos cuali (ccf y hplc) y cuantitativamente (hplc y colorimetr\u00eda).  los resultados obtenidos del estudio cualitativo no revelan diferencias a lo largo del ciclo evolutivo. Es de destacar al rur\u00f3sido como componente mayoritario en las tres poblaciones estudiadas, a pesar de pertenecer a distintas localizaciones geogr\u00e1ficas y parasitar especies diferentes. Los estudios cuantitativos ponen de manifiesto que, durante el ciclo vegetativo, las sumidades femeninas poseen siempre un contenido m\u00e1s elevado en flavonoides que las masculinas.
