Al ser una especie tetraploide, presenta un patr\u00f3n de herencia que dificulta enormemente la selecci\u00f3n en los programas de mejora cl\u00e1sica. As\u00ed, y mediante la utilizaci\u00f3n de genotipos diploides, se simplificar\u00eda en gran medida el seguimiento de los caracteres de inter\u00e9s, ya que la mejora a este nivel permite beneficiarse de la herencia dis\u00f3mica, posibilitando la introducci\u00f3n de germoplasma de especies afines silvestres, que son en su mayor\u00eda diploides, y de este modo incrementar la variabilidad gen\u00e9tica existente en el cultivo. Sin embargo, y debido a que el nivel ideal de ploid\u00eda es el tetraploide, el retorno a este nivel se hace necesario. El objetivo principal de la presente tesis doctoral es la obtenci\u00f3n y caracterizaci\u00f3n molecular, fisiol\u00f3gica y morfol\u00f3gica de h\u00edbridos som\u00e1ticos mediante fusi\u00f3n de protoplastos, salvando as\u00ed los problemas de incompatibilidad sexual entre las especies y consiguiendo al mismo tiempo el retorno al nivel tetraploide. El material vegetal utilizado consisti\u00f3 en genotipos diploides de alto rendimiento de solanum tuberosum y tres especies silvestres, s.  verrucosum, s. Brevidens y s. Chacoense con caracteres de inter\u00e9s. Adem\u00e1s, se analiz\u00f3 la variaci\u00f3n somaclonal obtenida mediante cultivo de protoplastos.
