En el caso del pl\u00e1smido conjugativo r388, trwd es un gen esencial para la conjugaci\u00f3n, para la expresi\u00f3n del pilus conjugativo y para la sensibilidad al fago prd1. La secuencia deducida de amino\u00e1cidos de trwd muestra gran homolog\u00eda con la superfamilia pule\/virb11 de potenciales atpasas implicadas en diversos procesos de transporte de macromol\u00e9culas a trav\u00e9s de membranas. Se ha purificado la prote\u00edna trwd y se ha demostrado la actividad atpasa de dicha prote\u00edna, as\u00ed como la esencialidad de tal actividad para el fen\u00f3meno de la conjugaci\u00f3n. Por otra parte, la localizaci\u00f3n de trwd, tanto en la fracci\u00f3n soluble como en la de membrana externa, puede indicar una asociaci\u00f3n perif\u00e9rica de trwd con la membrana. As\u00ed, se ha estudiado el efecto producido tras la adici\u00f3n de trwd, y diferentes mutantes en trwd, a membranas modelo como una aproximaci\u00f3n experimental para comprender la naturaleza de la interacci\u00f3n de trwd con la membrana bacteriana. Se ha demostrado que trwd es capaz de inducir la agregaci\u00f3n, la mezcla de los l\u00edpidos y la liberaci\u00f3n de los contenidos acuosos de los liposomas, lo cual sugiere la capacidad de trwd de
