El tratamiento con l-dopa, a dosis micromolares, fue toxico para cultivos de una linea celular procedente de un neuroblastoma humano (n1369) y para cultivos primarios neuronales procedentes de embrion de rata. El inhibidor del enzima mondamino oxidasa, l-deprenil, y el antioxidante, acido ascorbico, previnieron parcialmente la toxicidad de l-dopa en las celulas nb69. El tratamiento conjunto con ambos previno de forma casi total contra la toxicidad de l-dopa, se observo una inhibicion en la actividad del complejo iv de la cadena de transporte electronico, en las celulas nb69.
