El proenzima recombinante se ha purificado y caracterizado resultando sus mecanismos de activaci\u00f3n y inhibici\u00f3n id\u00e9nticos a los de la proteina purificada de p\u00e1ncreas.  mediante el uso de mutagenesis dirigida se ha desvelado el papel de las diferentes dianas de activaci\u00f3n tr\u00edptica presentes en el segmento de activaci\u00f3n de la pcpb.  asimismo se ha demostrado el papel crucial que juega la regi\u00f3n de conexi\u00f3n de dicho segmento en la prote\u00f3lisis de la procarboxipeptidasa b.  por \u00faltimo, se ha observado que la falta de actividad residual en este zimogeno se debe, en parte, al hecho de que presenta bloqueado el centro de fijaci\u00f3n de sustratos.
