La expresion de ambos genes comienza en el dia 15 de vida fetal y sus niveles de expresion aumentan progresivamente hasta la vida adulta. El hipotiroidismo disminuye los niveles de rnam gh a partir ya de la vida fetal. Por el contrario, los efectos de la hormona tiroidea sobre los genes a- y b-tsh se observan solo despues del nacimiento. El acido retinoico, un conocido inductor del gen gh \u00abin vitro\u00bb, no tiene ningun efecto sobre este gen, ni en el animal adulto ni durante el desarrollo. Las cuatro isoformas del receptor de t3, a1, a2, b1 y b2, presentes en la hipofisis del animal adulto, se encuentran ya presentes durante la vida fetal, siendo la isoforma b2 la mas abundante. Las cuatro isoformas se encuentran reguladas por t3 durante todo el periodo de desarrollo estudiado: a1, a2 y b2 son reprimidas por esta hormona, mientras que b1 esta muy disminuida en los animales hipotiroideos. En la hipofisis en desarrollo tambien se encuentran presentes las dos desiosidasas:  tipo i y tipo ii, que funcionan en el animal adulto.
