Las reinfecciones por el virus son muy frecuentes, lo cual puede ser debido a una respuesta inmune inadecuada o al elevado grado de variabilidad que presenta. La proteina g del vrs, encargada de la interaccion del virus con el receptor celular, induce una respuesta inmune protectora en humanos y en animales de experimentacion, sin embargo la gran variabilidad que presenta puede ser un factor que permita al virus reinfectar a un mismo individuo. El aislamiento de virus resistentes a la neutralizacion por acms anti-g y su posterior caracterizacion, han demostrado que el tercio carboxi terminal de la proteina g, admite multiples cambios de secuencia sin que se vea afectada la viabilidad del virus, al menos en cultivos celulares. Esta plasticidad que presenta la proteina g puede ser utilizada por el virus para evadir una barrera inmune de anticuerpos preexistentes, permitiendo asi las sucesivas
