El primero de ellos es la obtenci\u00f3n de carburos de ta y nb por reducci\u00f3n carbot\u00e9rmica de un concentrado mineral de columbotantalita de procedencia espa\u00f1ola, que se obtiene como subproducto del beneficio de la casiterita, con los consiguientes beneficios econ\u00f3micos y medioambientales. El otro, es la utilizaci\u00f3n de estos carburos como refuerzo de aceros r\u00e1pidos por v\u00eda pulvimetal\u00fargica para el desarrollo de materiales resistentes al desgaste, a la vez que buenas propiedades mec\u00e1nicas. Para tener unos materiales de referencia se utilizaron tambi\u00e9n como refuerzo carburos comerciales de ta y nb, de alta pureza, y se compararon, con las mismas condiciones de fabricaci\u00f3n, las propiedades de unos y otros.  la obtenci\u00f3n de carburos se llev\u00f3 a cabo en varias etapas: concentraci\u00f3n del mineral de partida por medios fisicos, eliminaci\u00f3n de impurezas por lixiviaci\u00f3n, carburizaci\u00f3n y caracterizaci\u00f3n de los productos.  el desarrollo de los materiales compuestos de matriz acero r\u00e1pido se realiz\u00f3, b\u00e1sicamente, a trav\u00e9s de los siguientes pasos: elecci\u00f3n de composiciones, mezcla de polvos, estudio dilatom\u00e9trico de todas las composiciones, estudio estad\u00edstico de los resultados del estudio dilatom\u00e9trico para la obtenci\u00f3n de las condiciones \u00f3ptimas de sinterizaci\u00f3n, sinterizaci\u00f3n de las composiciones m\u00e1s adecuadas, medida de las propiedades fisicas, mec\u00e1nicas y tribol\u00f3gicas, tratamientos t\u00e9rmicos y, por \u00faltimo, estudio microestructural mediante microscopia \u00f3ptica y electr\u00f3nica de
