Estos perros se dividieron en cinco grupos: 125 normales, 48 con htc, 44 enfermos sospechosos de htc, 100 enfermos y 34 eutiroideos bajo tratamiento con fenobarbital. Por otro lado, se determinaron los valores de t4t, t3 y t4l en 503 gatos para evaluar la utilidad de t4l en el diagn\u00f3stico de hipertiroidismo (htf). Estos gatos se dividieron en cuatro grupos: 72 normales, 279 con htf, 130 enfermos y 22 hipertiroideos con enfermedades concurrentes. El 87.5%, el 13.0% y el 97.9% de los 48 perros hipotiroideos tuvo valores bajos de t4t, t3t y t4l, respectivamente. De estos perros, el 79.2% tuvo valores altos de tsh. El 22%, 12.7% y el 19.4% de los perros enfermos tuvo valores bajos de t4t, t3t y t4l, mientras que el 9.7% de los perros enfermos tuvo niveles altos de tsh. El 17.7%, el 3.3% y el 26.5% de los perros tratados con fenobarbital, tuvo valores bajos de t4t, t3 y t4l, respectivamente; mientras que ninguno de \u00e9stos tuvo valores altos de tsh.  el 87.4%, 85.1% y el 96.8% de los 279 gatos hipertiroideos tuvo valores altos de t4t, t3t y t4l, respectivamente. En ninguno de los gatos enfermos se observ\u00f3 niveles altos de t4t, mientras que el 4.12% y el 6.9% de ellos tuvo valores elevados de t3t y t4l, respectivamente. Los resultados del presente estudio sugieren que la concentraci\u00f3n de t4l es la mejor prueba basal para la evaluaci\u00f3n de la funci\u00f3n tiroidea en perros y que la determinaci\u00f3n de tsh tambi\u00e9n es \u00fatil, especialmente cuando va acompa\u00f1ada de la concentraci\u00f3n de t4t o libre. La concentraci\u00f3n de t4l por di\u00e1lisis es v\u00e1lida para el diagn\u00f3stico de htf, sobre todo cuando el nivel de t4t permanece normal o ligeramente alto.
