Ypialfa pertenece al grupo de proteinas acidas ribosomales, tiene un punto isoelectrico muy acido y es dispensable para la viabilidad celular. Ademas, se ha demostrado que se puede llevar a cabo un nivel basal de sintesis de proteina con robosomas carentes de proteinas acidas. Seria en estos ribosomas, la proteina po la que estaria permitiendo la interacion de los factores de elongacion con la particula ribosomal, para que se pueda llevar a cabo la traduccion. Se ha demostrado que es necesaria la interaccion estable al ribosoma de al menos una proteina acida o de po, para que a traves del extremo carboxilo de estas proteinas que es identico en todas ellas,
