Los primeros cap\u00edtulos est\u00e1n dedicados a eventos biogr\u00e1ficos, posturas teol\u00f3gicas y escuelas filos\u00f3ficas que influyeron en su escatolog\u00eda. Los \u00faltimos tratan sobre la inmortalidad del alma y la resurrecci\u00f3n del cuerpo. El \u00faltimo cap\u00edtulo presenta la ense\u00f1anza de newman sobre la esperanza, la virtud que capacita al cristiano para dirigir su vida entera al encuentro pleno con la trinidad.  el principio dogm\u00e1tico y el principio sacramental, descritos por \u00e9l en la apolog\u00eda pro vita sua, fueron los fundamentos de su teolog\u00eda. La \u00abprobabilidad antecedente\u00bb fue un principio secundario que el emple\u00f3 mucho, por ejemplo, en la explicaci\u00f3n de la doctrina sobre el castigo eterno de los condenados.  newman destac\u00f3 el papel de la cristolog\u00eda para una correcta comprensi\u00f3n del fin del hombre, el juicio y la resurrecci\u00f3n, subrayando de este modo la estrecha relaci\u00f3n que existe entre la cristolog\u00eda y la escatolog\u00eda. Newman tambi\u00e9n contribuy\u00f3 a la revitalizaci\u00f3n de la creencia patr\u00edstica en el estado intermedio. Una vez cat\u00f3lico acept\u00f3 como un desarrollo genuino de doctrina la creencia en la intercesi\u00f3n de los santos y en el purgatorio, ambos expuestos en el sue\u00f1os de geroncio.  en el purgatorio las almas de los difuntos est\u00e1n \u00abincompletas\u00bb; ellas esperan la resurrecci\u00f3n que tendr\u00e1 lugar en el \u00faltimo d\u00eda. La resurrecci\u00f3n completar\u00e1 la salvaci\u00f3n de los justos y representar\u00e1 la victoria final sobre la muerte.
