Su acci\u00f3n consiste en la disminuci\u00f3n de los niveles de glucosa en sangre. En respuesta a glucosa se producen variaciones en el potencial de membrana de estas c\u00e9lulas e incrementos en la concentraci\u00f3n de calcio que producen la secreci\u00f3n de la insulina. Los estudios en estas c\u00e9lulas se han realizado tradicionalmente in vitro, pero en esas preparaciones no est\u00e1n presentes factores que est\u00e1n presentes in vivo. El objetivo de este trabajo fue realizar registro el\u00e9ctrico y medidas de la concentraci\u00f3n de calcio intracelular in vivo y estudiar la acci\u00f3n de factores sobre la c\u00e9lula beta que no est\u00e1n presentes in vitro. Los resultados obtenidos nos indican que in vivo existen oscilaciones en la concentraci\u00f3n de calcio intracelular que corresponden con oscilaciones del potencial de membrana y que aparecen en el rango fisiol\u00f3gico de glucemia. In vivo existe una mayor sensibilidad de las c\u00e9lulas beta a glucosa debido a factores que modulan la respuesta de la c\u00e9lula. Hemos encontrado que mediadores del sistema nervioso aut\u00f3nomo como galanina ejercen una inhibici\u00f3n de la actividad de la c\u00e9lula. Por otro lado, p\u00e9ptidos del tracto gastrointestinal producen una potenciaci\u00f3n de la actividad de la c\u00e9lula.
