La autodepuraci\u00f3n de los r\u00edos se muestra a todas luces insuficiente para evitar los efectos perniciosos de variada \u00edndole que causa el agua utilizada. As\u00ed, se concluye la necesidad de depurar las aguas residuales. Actualmente, la escasez y carest\u00eda de terrenos disponibles obliga a buscar procesos compactos, que ocupen poca superficie, sean f\u00e1cilmente ubicables, y permitan su cubrici\u00f3n. El planteamiento anterior fue el que propici\u00f3 la realizaci\u00f3n de la presente tesis doctoral. Tras los ensayos experimentales, se logr\u00f3 cubrir la mayor\u00eda de los objetivos propuestos.  el principal radicaba en la consecuci\u00f3n de un sistema de depuraci\u00f3n cuya implantaci\u00f3n supusiera la m\u00ednima superficie posible. De paso, se lograron optimizar los diversos aspectos cr\u00edticos que afectan al sistema, como son la optimizaci\u00f3n de los rellenos utilizados y, fundamentalmente, de su altura de trabajo, optimizaci\u00f3n de los lavados, adecuaci\u00f3n de los par\u00e1metros de dise\u00f1o, control de las variables, optimizaci\u00f3n de los automatismos, viabilidad de la alternancia de flujos y, simult\u00e1neamente, seguimiento de nutrientes, especialmente, de compuestos nitrogenados.
